In 1920 an Indian Yogi and Guru named Paramahansa Yogananda came to America to introduce people in the west to the teachings of meditation and Yoga. There’s a book called “Man’s Eternal Quest” which is a collection of talks and essays on Yogananda’s spiritual teachings. Here’s what Yogananda has to say about alcohol…
“There is nothing worse for the body and mind than drinking intoxicating liquors. Under their influence a man may do things that in his right mind he would be ashamed to do. Violence, greed, lust for money and sex, even murder may result from drunkenness. The belief that wine, sex experiences, and money will bring happiness is said by the sages to be the chief delusion that man must overcome in order to realize his true nature.
Liquor increases man’s desires for money and sex, and it is therefore the worst evil of the three. Intoxicating liquor is an unnecessary and extremely dangerous indulgence because it stifles reason. A drunken man is no longer a true man. It is wisdom to strive to maintain only normal appetites.”
